Bryan Tan of Skritch

Bryan Tan: Rockstar, Rapper, Lyricist, Soloist, Baritone

As a high baritone, Bryan Tan pushes the limits of the human voice in ways that are unimaginable to the average human being. His brazenly modern rock voice can be heard almost anywhere, from Skritch albums to national radio commercials in the U.S.A. As a singer, Bryan is best known for bringing up the decibel level at every Skritch event with his distinctive, throaty timbre. As a lyricist and rapper, Bryan—or Bra. T, as he is known in this capacity—brings a whole new dimension to Skritch - one that is yet unmatched in the Asian vocal band scene. It is uncommon for vocal bands to include raps and urban beats in their repertoires to begin with, but when the bar is raised as high as Bryan sets it with Skritch, it virtually creates an entirely brand new genre of vocal music - what Skritch fans have come to know and love as Da 6-Man Vocal Band Jam.

Bryan began his vocal training as a tenor in the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and Anglo-Chinese Junior College Choirs, where he won numerous local and international awards (including the Grand Prix award and three gold stamps at the Tampereen-Savel International Choir Festival in Tampere, Finland), and was the first ever solo performer at the Opening Ceremony of the Singapore Youth Festival. Bryan has to date won many individual awards and accolades for his singing, including the inaugural Absolute U.S. 2004 at Zouk. He garnered international recognition for his work in The Stanford Harmonics' Shadowplay album, and was nominated in the Best Soloist category at the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards 2006 - the a cappella world's Grammy Awards ceremony. In addition, he was the first Singaporean soloist to feature on the Best of Collegiate A Cappella compilation album - an annual collection of the finest varsity vocal tracks from universities around the world.

His talent as a lyricist is essential to the band's arrangement process, and contributes greatly to the songwriting process; his talent as a rapper means that mundane songs are infused with an urban flavour after having gone through his creative filter. Along with Tim, Bryan plays a vital role in the vocal remix process of songs, and along with Mike, Bryan provides the solid backbone on which Skritch's harmonic blend is allowed to flourish. But when truly allowed to let loose onstage as lead vocalist, Bryan yells, screams, shouts and along the way effortlessly captures the imagination of a spellbound audience - the hallmark of a true rockstar.
