Dolf Ng: Choreographer, Dancer, Soloist, High Tenor Before Skritch burst onto the Singaporean a cappella scene in 1999, onstage routines were visually limited by the a cappella tradition itself. There were few vocal bands that dared break out of the mould to develop their onstage visual presence. Dolf Ng joined Skritch and changed all that, paving the way for the all-round experience that is contemporary, Live a cappella. Aside from possessing a heavily R&B influenced pop-singing voice, Dolf has managed to maintain Skritch's pioneering edge in innovative performance standards by choreographing all of Skritch's urban hip-hop dance sequences. As a singer, Dolf is one of Skritch's high tenors, and his vocal education began when he sang with the Raffles Institution's award-winning choir. After graduating from the St. Andrew's Junior College (SAJC), he moved on to hone his voice on the nightclub circuit - indeed, Dolf was known for his smooth delivery as much as for his stylish vocal turns, and was an often requested resident songster at several popular nightlife destinations. However, Dolf is absolutely invaluable to Skritch just as much for his vocal talent as his dance experience. While at SAJC, Dolf founded the Hip-Hop Dance Club, and went on to become the Club's Artistic Director. The choreography and leadership training he received during that stint now imparts a certain sense of style on Skritch's performing energy, and gives the band its larger-than-life onstage presence. Skritch's choreography is strikingly different from the simple, run-of-the-mill dance steps employed by most of the a cappella world. With full-blown dance segments involving heavy beatboxing, wild vinyl scratching and lyrical rap solos, Da 6-Man Vocal Band Jam brings the vocal band experience to a new level. Dolf is at the center of this revolution, and indeed, has played an indirect but pivotal role in encouraging Singapore's young and emerging vocal talent to engage a very different side of their audiences' sensory dichotomy. Whether by belting out a funk-laced solo or showing off his individual dance chops at a Skritch show, Dolf has inadvertently transformed the traditional vocal band show into an all-encompassing sensory feast.
