Jin Ng: Bass, Pitch, Theoretician Along with Pete and Bryan, Jin is one of the three founding members of Skritch. As the band's bass singer, he not only completes the multi-octaved range of Skritch, but provides the solid foundation upon which further realms of perfection are achieved. With his impeccable grasp of music theory and his consummately reliable sense of perfect pitch, Jin is an invaluable asset to the band's ever-evolving musical education. Indeed, his own evolution of bass-singing style through the years, reflecting the dynamic, contemporary Skritch sound, has proven absolutely vital to Skritch's sustained growth and emergence as perhaps one of the most progressive vocal bands in Asia. Jin began his musical training from a very early age, and to this day remains an accomplished pianist. However, it was by undergoing the rigours of the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)'s special Music Elective Program that Jin truly furthered his knowledge and skills, emerging top student in the program on an almost yearly basis. Jin's naturally deep voice, coupled with his precise delivery and striking tone, meant that when Peter was looking into engaging a bass singer for his fledgling a cappella group back in 1999, he knew exactly who he had in mind. Rightly so: Jin has over the years blossomed into one of the most sought-after bass singers in Singapore, and in conjunction with Pete's beats and Tim's scratches, his bass riffs are an essential component of Skritch's rhythm section and are one of the band's major creative outlets. It comes as no surprise, then, that the words, "I love that bass!" were firmly embraced in Skritch fan culture after the AKA A Cappella V concert in 2002. Those immortal words, spoken by none other than AKA-A-Cappella-Producer-cum-mentor-of-Skritch, Andy Quek, while he was congratulating the band on their showstopping performance on the night, are merely a reminder that the sweetest Skritch harmonies and highest-soaring Skritch melodies are nothing without a top-notch Jin Ng bass line backing them up. It is no understatement to say that by changing the bass line of a song, you are in effect changing the song itself. Nobody comprehends the full meaning of this old cliché better than Jin Ng. A different riff produces an entirely different sonic landscape; Jin handles the intricacies of Skritch's bass line with panache and flair, often improvising and ad-libbing onstage. It takes a truly gifted vocalist to deliver on so consistent a basis what Jin does daily for Da 6-Man Vocal Band Jam. Contact: jin@skritch.net |
