Michael Cho: Songwriter, Soul-oist, Tenor If there is one feature that distinguishes Skritch from the average Singaporean vocal band, it is the sheer quality of the band's solo singers, and if that is so, then perhaps no one band member embodies the soul and heart of Skritch's music more than Mike Cho. Mike belongs to that rare breed of singers who are able to transcend the mere musicality of a song to bring forth lush imagery and breathtaking emotion through their vocal delivery. The mere acts of carrying a tune and staying in pitch alone are not enough to convince an audience of any true meaning, and it is in this aspect that Mike excels with his melodic talent. Mike's extensive experience in music encompasses a vast array of talents. As a vocalist, he was formerly the President of the Temasek Junior College Choir, and spent time developing his now finely-honed singing voice. Mike's voice has been described as everything from "husky" to downright "sexy," and is indeed a true Skritch trademark, often heard gliding silky smooth in a skillful cadenza or a honey-sweet tenor riff, lingering effortlessly above the intricate vocal web below. It is difficult to accurately pinpoint what it is about Mike's delivery that makes a lasting impression on an audience. Sincere, emotive, soulful, insightful and occasionally pained, it is a voice that simultaneously carries with it a veteran maturity and an inexplicable, almost childlike naiveite. What visual artists take months to create with a paint palette, Mike replicates in a matter of seconds on the mental canvas of the listener. To this end, he was once voted as having the "Sexiest Voice" among the band members by one of Skritch's fan clubs. As an instrumentalist, Mike is an accomplished singer-songwriter, and this aspect of his musical life has given Skritch some of its biggest hits to date. Mike's talent as a songwriter apparently knows no bounds - he is constantly composing and writing new material. However, despite his prolific workrate, quality is not sacrificed - 想你在樣的天氣 (Xiang Ni Zai Ze Yang De Tian Qi), one of the first Skritch singles to receive regular airplay on Singaporean radio, was unsurprisingly one of Mike's intellectual contributions to Da 6-Man Vocal Band Jam. Astonishingly, between him and Pete, the duo have written the music for every single one of Skritch's original songs to date. Contact: mike@skritch.net |
