Peter Huang of Skritch

Peter Huang: Mouthdrummer, Beatboxer, Arranger, Songwriter, Soloist, High Tenor

In 1999, a young singer-songwriter named Peter Huang received an offer to perform at the ballroom of a prestigious Singaporean country club's annual dinner and dance. The catch was this: the event manager was very specific in his set-request - it had to be an a cappella performance, and Peter realized that he needed more than the usual formula of his guitar and individual voice. Quickly, he set to work, rounding up five of his good friends whom he knew "could sing," and began the process of arranging songs to be sung without instrumental backup. The rest, as they say, is history.

Since that fateful day, Peter has gone on to become not only the talismanic leader of Skritch, but also to realize his childhood dream of becoming a full-time musician. His background in music spans several genres, from the R&B world of mandarin pop, to the edgier side of English rock, and his talents similarly run the gamut from the regular, to the absolutely unbelievable. Peter brings to Skritch not only solid musicianship, but also a firm direction, which has seen the group skyrocket in status as one of the continent's most formidable vocal bands. His beatboxing talent is undeniable, and the process of hard work polishing this rare skill under some of the most famous names in the global beatboxing community have paid dividends for Skritch over the years. Peter is today recognized as one of Asia's foremost "mouthdrumming" experts, and has represented not only Skritch, but also the nation of Singapore, at prestigious events abroad.

Beatboxing aside, Peter also is a top-notch singer. Formerly a member of the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Choir's Tenor Section and the Tenor Sectional Leader in the River Valley High School Choir, his soaring vocals, like the drumbeats he produces, can only be described as “pyrotechnical”. Peter has continued his musical education at the LaSalle College of the Arts, and most recently, at the world-famous Berklee College of Music in Boston.

But for all these strengths, perhaps Peter's greatest contribution to Skritch are his gifts of arranging and songwriting. No vocal band can survive without a steady flow of creative arrangements, and to this end, Peter has become an utterly indispensable member of Da 6-Man Vocal Band Jam. Bagging the "Arranger Of The Year" award at the 2001 Harmony Awards for Skritch's funked-up version of Janet Jackson's Doesn't Really Matter, and top honours at several songwriting competitions across the isle, Peter is constantly ensuring Skritch's music stays contemporary and in-style.

Outside of Skritch / Where is he now? Peter has just released his second solo album, My Guiding Light, under Linfair Records, the same label that propelled Singaporean artist Sun Ho to #1 on the American Billboard Dance Charts. He is currently a student at Berklee College of Music, Boston, double majoring in Music Business and Management, and Music Production and Engineering. Peter was active in the Berklee Jazz Hip-Hop Orchestra and the Contemporary Christian Ensemble in 2005, and while in Boston, he was a member of the Boston-based vocal band Integration by Parts, and helped organize Vocal Band Aid, a large scale charity event involving vocal bands from around the U.S. which raised funds to support music education in American schools. He has taken a temporary hiatus from Berklee to pursue his solo music career, and is currently making the rounds on the Taiwanese music circuit. In this period of indefinite dormancy for Skritch, we wish him all the best in his individual pursuits.
